History
The house was built in 1922. Bob and Faye Spragins were the original owners. Faye was born in 1886 and was the Martindale postmaster for 36 years from 1919 to 1956. She was also a concert pianist and music teacher. Bob was born in 1868 and established a butchering and market business in Martindale in1890 while trading livestock and running a feed barn. Later in life he helped Faye as assistant postmaster until his death in 1952. Their only child was Clinton Spragins. The yellow house next door was built for Clint, his wife Joan and daughter Carol. Carol and her husband raised their 3 children in the house. Tom and Bonnie McCarroll purchased the house from the Spragins family in 1983 and lived there for 30 years with their 3 boys. In order to accommodate their family they remodeled what was the attic into an additional two bedrooms and a bathroom.
The House was then purchased by our family in October of 2016. |
Location
We are right in the heart of Martindale, just a few blocks from the very quaint downtown. There is a burger and BBQ restaurant around the corner. There is an awesome taco stand a short drive or walk away. There is also a public park with playscape and shallow river access (great for young kids) about 3/4 mile down the road. The house is a 10 to 15 minute drive to San Marcos and Lockhart, 35 miles from Austin, and 55 from San Antonio. Hosts live a few houses down and value your privacy, but can also be available to answer questions and insure you have a wonderful stay.

Happy People
"Our two families, four adults and four elementary aged kids, felt right at home. The kids went fishing off the dock, we made a fire out back in the fire pit, the stars were amazing. The house had everything we needed to cook, relax and stay cozy. There were board games, movies and toys for the kids, and even toys and kids books. We loved the separate upstairs rooms for the kids and downstairs rooms for the grownups. The house was beautifully restored and decorated and kept its historic charms while being completely modern and comfortable." |
